How to Dress Your House to Impress (From a Girl Who Knows Dresses)

Let’s get one thing straight: I know a good outfit when I see one — and honey, your house deserves the same love. Whether I’m putting on a bold lipstick or fluffing throw pillows in a living room, it’s all about making a statement. Just like you wouldn’t show up to a gala in gym shorts (unless that’s the theme… in which case, call me), you shouldn’t list your home without giving it a little glow-up. So let’s talk staging — aka, dressing your house to sell.
1. Start with the Foundation (Neutrals Are the New Black)
Before we even get to the accessories, we need a solid base. Neutral paint, clean lines, and clutter-free spaces are your house’s version of a classic little black dress. Timeless, flattering, and always in style.
2. Add a Pop of Personality
Whether it’s a bright throw pillow, a bold piece of art, or a stunning vase of fresh tulips, your home needs something to catch the eye — like a statement necklace or a killer pair of shoes.
In real estate, we call that a “focal point.” In fashion, I call it, “Look at me, I’m fabulous.”
3. Fit is Everything
Oversized furniture in a tiny room? That’s like wearing a ballgown to brunch. Show off your home’s shape by making sure every piece fits the space. You want buyers to walk in and breathe, not bump into a sectional the size of a school bus
4. Don’t Forget the Accessories (But Keep Them Classy)
Too many personal items (I’m looking at you, wall of cat calendars) can overwhelm buyers. Pare it down to chic, intentional décor — think gold accents, soft lighting, and cozy textures.
This is less “show your life” and more “sell the dream.
5. Smell Like Success
Okay, this isn’t exactly dressing your house — but scent is the final touch, like spritzing perfume before walking out the door. Go for something fresh and subtle: citrus, clean linen, or a touch of vanilla.
(What not to do: heavy florals, bacon grease, or whatever that mystery candle from 2012 is trying to be.)
Melinda’s Staging Mantra:
“If your house wouldn’t swipe right on itself… it’s time to zhuzh.”
Staging isn’t about hiding flaws — it’s about showing off your home’s best assets. And lucky for you, I’ve got an eye for both floor plans and flair.
Whether you need full-on staging help or just want some expert advice (with a side of sass), I’ve got you covered. So give me a call and let’s get snazzy!
